This collection of four Regency short stories is excellent. Each story is well written and perfectly executed, with an interesting plot and well drawn characters. The first two stories I thought were 4 stars reads, while the second two each garners 5 stars from this reader. Although, I have to say that my favorite by far was "...and a Sixpence for Her Shoe". That story made me cry because of the sorrow and angst experienced by both the h and H as they tried to navigate their way to a HEA. Below I've given a very brief synopsis of each story, for those of you who would like to have a bit more information than provided by the book blurb. The Castaway
In this story, the Marquess of Canby is trying to find his long lost granddaughter who he has decided will be his heir. Unfortunately, he has been having a difficult time wading through all the false claims brought forward by young ladies claiming to be his Felicity. To that end, the Marquess' young friend, the Earl of Branford, has been helping him to either prove, or disprove, each lady's claim. The latest claimant is Martha Finch, a young widow who the Earl finds fascinating. But, is she really the Marquess' granddaughter as she claims, or just another imposter? 4 Stars
The Wooing of Lord Walford
In this second story, Charlie, the second son of an Earl, is determined to win a wager he entered into several years earlier with a bunch of his school chums. According to the terms of the wager, the last man to remain unmarried would win the pot. Charlie is one of two men left in the running. He is determined to win the money (now with some £12k.) To help him in his endeavor he enlists the aid of his best friend, Sally. This story made me LOL at times. Charlie is quite a character. Sally's prospective groom, Lord Walford, is, according to Charlie, "a pattern card of masculine splendor." LOL. Sally is inclined to agree with this sentiment. 4 Stars
...and a Sixpence for Her Shoe
This was my favorite of all the stories. It is about a young couple who are betrothed from childhood. The hero, Drew, the second son of an Earl, is discharged after three years in the army due to an injury, that has left him scarred and maimed. At the time of his departure, Drew and Catherine parted on bad terms. Now that he's back, can they overcome their differences and fulfill their parents dream of a marriage between the two off them? This is an extremely poignant story. I cried quite a bit as I read it. Drew is such a tortured soul. He truly believes he is worthless because of the limitations caused by his injuries. Furthermore, all the ugliness he witnessed while fighting in the war has changed him into a completely different man from the one he used to be. He really rakes Catherine over the coals before she gets her HEA. But, I couldn't help but love Drew, and I totally sympathized with him. As for Catherine, she did, to some extent, bring a certain amount of the misery down on herself. However, she too is a sympathetic character, and I liked her very much. I actually related to Catherine more than I did to Drew. 5 Stars
Melody
The last story is about Melody, a 29 year old spinster, and the new Earl of Sandborne, Josh. Melody serves as lady's companion to Josh's aunt, the Dowager Countess. IMO this is the most romantic of the four stories because you get to see the two fall in love. Very sweet, and another 5 star read.

Escapades Four Regency Novellas edition by Anne Barbour Romance eBooks Reviews
This was a very good deal with four short stories at a great price. I will just say that I truly disliked the third story because the H was so bitter and twisted and dealt with the h in a very nasty way. The other stories were great though.
All the stories were well written thus the story line was easy to follow. The author as always draws the reader in and allows the reader to experience the many emotions of her characters. The stories had intrigue, suspense, betrayal, revelations, excitement, and romance. Anne Barbour didn't disappoint.
I enjoyed all of these stories. The characters were well written and likeable. Anne Barbour is a fine author. I am very happy that she has written many books.
This is a lovely collection of four regency romance short stories. They are all individual stand-alone stories that are not connected. But they are all simple, lovely, romantic stories that are a treat to read. Unlike most shorts, these stories manage to convey their tales completely without leaving the reader feeling like something was missing or glossed over. Very well-written. Highly recommended for all Regency Romance lovers.
This is a most appealing, elegantly composed, collection of novellas. With each story, depth and intensity are gradually developed. Sheer pleasure to read!
In her review, Reading Fanatic has presented excellent synopses, so I won't. I agree with RF's assessment and stars given to each tale, as well.

In the latter part of THE CASTAWAY, I could have done without the 'dash of Devonshire'. IMO it was an unnecessary device; the circumstances could have been defined in other, more satisfying ways. 4 Stars - with reservations.
END OF SPOILER
The second story was lighthearted and delightful! I was immediately taken by the title, reminding me of a tower of historical fiction, THE TONTINE by a giant of the genre, Thomas B. Costain. I read that many, many years ago. It was a blockbuster in its day and remains so to me.
I have discovered Anne Barbour very recently and I'm not sure how. If you already know her work, you will enjoy these stories. If you do not know her yet, this set of four novellas is a wonderful place to start. Somewhere I read that these stories are from other collections, gathered back together again under her name alone. One has a Christmas theme. They all represent her well. For novellas, these are unusually rich. She is able to provide variety in setting and mood, but each story is clearly written and romantic in an old-fashioned and deeply thoughtful way. There can be humor, mystery, surprise, and even pain; but, ultimately, there is sweet understanding between H&h. Ahhhhhh.
I bought this book as an inexpensive way to pass the time on an airplane, and it served that purpose well.
These angst-laden short stories are a sort of Georgette Heyer-lite. They cover much of Heyer's territory, but without her deft touch with characterization and plotting. When Heyer writes about young, self-centered cubs falling in love, the story is laugh out loud funny and I enjoy the young man's stumbling toward maturity and love. In a similar story in this book, I wanted to give the young cub a shake and tell him to grow up.
The tortured souls in this book were a bit much for me and their travails went on too long. I felt manipulated and pushed toward tears I did not feel compelled to shed.
There are few 99 cent books worth buying. This one is worth purchasing. Just don't expect it to equal the best of the genre.
